I have a linksys WRT54GX. Unfortunately it seems to be failing.

Why do routers fail? Why do linksys routers fail so quickly?? like in 2 years.

I'm pretty sure its on its way out although I cant be sure so here are the symptoms...

One night it just stopped being possible to connect to. There was no reason for this whatsoever, nothing had changed at all. By connect I of course do not mean to the internet but to the wifi network.

I could not get the configured network to work again by cycling the power. I hit the reset button recently, and it actually reset all of the settings, which it normally doesn't do. I was able to connect after this though.

First I attempted setup through wifi. It seemed to work although there were some timeouts. Then I think it stopped working and I wasn't able to connect again.

Wired configuration finally worked. I can connect with wifi and do some browsing with WPA2+AES encryption.
But not all sites work. Facebook was the only one I tested, maybe deviantart before I said ' this is dumb'
And configuring over wifi simply does not work at all anymore. Time out at the config page.

And laptops running linux time out with any website.

Where can you get routers with a 3 year warranty or something? WHAT is actually reliable?

Bad news is that Linksys is reliable :p
Routers fail for different reasons- cheap capacitors, cheap PSUs and overheating. It's not really consistent across the range of each company- there are models that are better and some that are worse. Linksys is one of those companies that are pretty consistent and reliable.

You might want to consider Netgear, TP-Link and Buffalo in addition to Linksys.

If you get consistently failing electronics, it may be time to look into investing into a UPS of some sort. Crappy power with varying voltages and such can really take a toll on electronics, especially when we're talking a router or something that is so inexpensive.

Bad power can kill even the best hardware. I use APC UPS's on all my computer hardware. Most have the larger SmartUPS 1000kva and 1500kva units with network cards so if there's a problem I get notified so no surprises.
