I have an older SMC G router with a print server (2804WPRB). The router constantly loses the internet connection and it has to be turned off and on and then reconnect to the network to reengage (i.e., can't do it via Windows or through an Ipconfig renew/release command). It's incredibly annoying, at times I have to reboot 5 to 10 times an hour!

Has anyone else experienced this issue and are their any suggestions for a fix, or is it just time for a new router?

    Tx

Try restarting your modem too and see if that helps.

    I second restarting the modem.

I have cable internet at home (Time Warner) and about once a month, I'll have to reboot the router (or server if that's connected to the internet) constantly. Eventually, 6 months later, I found out that the cable modem has to be unplugged for 5-10 minutes.

Kind of sound like its over heating. Turn it off at night and see if it runs longer before it starts acting up again.

Probably about time for a new router. I just replaced an old SMC2804WBR for a friend that the wireless died in. Replaced it with a Buffalo WRT-HP-G54, for $30 on sale on black friday.

Amazing this thread comes up right now. I was at my buddy's place this weekend and he was having the exact same problem with the exact same router. He replaced it with a Linksys one this afternoon and has had no problems whatsoever. It's too bad, too, because that SMC router was pretty nice.

Yeah, I've tried rebooting the modem several times as well. Didn't think about the overheating issues (didn't even realize these things got hot!). Likely going to try a new router. They're pretty cheap these days anyhow, just don't want to pick up one with the same issue!

    Cheers.

Avoid the Linksys WRT54G or GS, They have issues with very little ram to operate in. And any Belkin HW, my experience is these are not reliable. Have yet to have one work more the 30 days with out issues. Which is bad since they seam to test pretty good.

I only buy hardware that can run after market firmware like dd-wrt.

I've got two computers running off a WRT54G and everything's dandy, even with uTorrent and Counter-Strike

I agree. Before I upgraded my entire network, I had a WRT54G for almost 5 years. It was (and still is) an extremely dependable and stable router. I never had any issues whatsoever. Granted, I had an original hardware revision that ran Linux, which is much better than any of the newer versions!

I'm leaning towards a Draft N router as I should be getting a laptop with an Intel 4965 AGN card. The Apple Extreme seems to be the one to beat right now, but also the highest priced?

My router's the latest one, version 8, with the "crippled" hardware specs.

On topic: Move the router away from any heaters, windows, or other heat sources. Also, fix any computer problems by getting updates and scanning for malware.

The last linksys (wrt54gs v7) I worked on was doing the same crap as yours when more that 1 user connected. Then if you opened up multiple pages/sites, crash. I would look at loading the dd-wrt firmware into it. Al least it will be stable.

Not all, but lot of SMC stuff (especially the older stuff) is more or less garbage.

Just picked up a DLink DIR-655, so far so good! Can't wait for my new laptop with an N wireless card to ship.

Odd, when I tried to use MAC Filtering I can't seem to get it to work and have to reboot the router to get back onto the internet, but will play with it somemore later and post in a more appropriate section.

SMC will be heading to the garbage bin!
