My friend got me this router Amazon.com: D-Link Systems DIR-605L Wireless-N300 Cloud Router: Electronics

and i was wondering why i cant get the same speeds when i am using wireless. When i use a lan cable i get around 300kbps on downloads and when on wifi i can only manage to get 70kbps. is this normal? The router is very good as i get better signals in the compound and online games dont drop anymore. I also like the iphone app because i can monitor what sites the users go to and can block people from using my connection but doing so requires a reboot which makes it a hassle.
    I dont seem to understand
    1. what the advantages are if i choose 20/40mhz auto or the 20mhz on the bandwidth settings
    2. the option wireless mode where i have 2 options 802.11mixed(g/n/b) and 802.11mixed(g/b). what should i select?
    3. are all routers like this?not getting the same download speed as compared to when you use the lan cable?

Are the download speeds you mentioned in kB/s or kb/s? There is a rather large difference between Bytes and bits (yes this matters, a lot actually) Aside from that, how far are you from the router, how many wireless are there near you, on which channel is your network and what is your wireless adapter. Finally, you want that router set to wireless N.

    On to your actual questions:
1: Set it to auto, but it'll likely go back to 20MHz due to interference, still can't hurt to leave it on auto since you may be in a situation where 40MHz is possible (unlikely, but possible)
    2: As I said above, wireless N
3: Yes and no. Wired will let you achieve better maximum throughput than wireless when transferring data from one computer to another, but when it comes to Internet speeds, your connection is very often the limiting factor. For example I have a 15 Mb/s Internet connection (that's 1.875 M B/s) and I get the same download speed both wired or wireless. That said, if i transfer files from one computer to another on my network (so when the Internet is not involved at all), my wireless tops at ~160Mb/s, but wired, I can go much higher than that.

I get drops using the 20/40mhz during online games.
i think its kilobits. Its the one we use to measure speed when we download torrents in applications/clients such as utorrent. I am around 15-20ft away from the family room(where the router is located) and a hard wall(cemented) is in between.
Speedtest shows 2.8mbps down when wired and .56mbps down when on wifi.

should i update the firmware? i am currently using 01.12 but a 01.13 exists. What advantages do i get and should i always update firmware whenever a new one comes up? sorry for the noob questions

oh wow just experience a connection drop any ideas how to fix this? Also I cant seem to find a router in amazon without a complaint in disconnection/dropping of connection in the 30-50$ price range. I guess its normal for cheap routers? or is it my wireless card in my laptop?

I'm not sure a firmware update will change something, you'll have to look at the patch notes for 1.13 to see if there's any change that is worth it to you. Your download speed is most likely reported in kilobytes in utorrent, it would add up to your internet connection speed (1 Byte = 8 bits).

The cement probably absorbs some of the signal for the wireless which doesn't help. Since you're having drops on auto, put it on 20MHz. Also download inSSIDer and check how many networks are in range of you. Ideally, you'll want to set your network on the least used channel out of channels 1, 6 and 11.

Also make sure that your wireless adapter's drivers are up to date, something I forgot to mention.

I can think of two reasons why you are getting slower speeds on wireless
1: There is a ton of interference which limits your throughput.
2: For some reason your router is defaulting back to wireless g. It's too bad that you can't force it to n only, that would at least allow us to verify that.
3: A combination of the two

Regarding 30-50$ routers, there are some decent ones and some bad ones. I tend to avoid D-Link because of past bad experiences and because there are better alternatives for the same price, TP-Link is a good example. Also, wireless being what it is, there will always be people who will experience connection issues due to their environment.

I used the speedtest app in my iphone4s and the download speed showed 2.8mbps which is my normal speed. Now I really think its my wireless card. Any ideas how to fix this? I tried looking at the device manager and it says that my wireless card driver is up to date. Maybe I should roll back to the old drivers? Help please :(

What's your wireless card? Is it by any chance an Atheros AR928x?

Are you using Killer drivers or stock Atheros drivers? What's your driver version? Windows 7?

Check this one 10.0.0.218/10.0.0.217 and this one- 10.0.0.221.

Atheros drivers got worse with introduction of Windows 8 so I can't guarantee it will be any better than your drivers but no harm in trying- you can always revert to a previous one.

ok i tried the drivers win78-10.0.0.75-whql no more drops. but speedtest shows 1.28mbps out of a possible 2.8mbps which is less than half but is 2x better than my previous which only gives me .60-70mbps in speedtest.should i be contented?

oh wow! you are my savior! i tried the 1st link and it gave me 2.48mbps. My brother is using his 4s to download a game so i guess thats why it didnt give me my net speed but I guess this is fixed now. Only problem is I dont have the killer application which i love but this is better I guess. only hope this doesnt give me drops now. Thanks! will report back if i get any bugs/errors or anything like that :)
