I'm usually hooked up behind a router, but since I'm having issues with the router, I'm hooked up through my modem. Recently, a window popped up when I turned on my computer saying that there was some time of upgrade for my modem. So I followed the steps, but ever since I couldn't get on the internet through the router. This is what it says:

    Then

So after I followed those instructions and tried to get on the internet, the same message displayed. The only way I'm able to access the internet is if I am directly connected to the modem. This is very inconvenient since there 3 computers and a laptop hooked up to the router.

When I try to call AT&T Support, they told me it was a router problem. So when I called Linksys Support, they told me it was a modem problem. So after trying both for two more times and getting the same responses, I decided to give up.

What is the issue here?? I really hope that I'm not the only person experiencing this

It's both a Modem and Router problem, but more so a Router prob. right now IMO. I don't know about AT&T's service since i've never used them before but that Modem upgrade thing seems weird to me. Nevertheless if u connect the Modem back into the Router as it should be...what exactly is the error or problem. What does the Network Connection Icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen look like?

I suggest first going to Start-->Control Panel-->open up 'Network Connections'. Right click the active wireless connection, go to properties and select Internet Protocol at the very bottom of the list that is shown...then click on properties and select 'Obtain Automatically' for both settings IF your router usually distributes IP addresses. If not set the Static IP's. Press ok then put in the 2 checks to 'Show icon in notification area when connected' and 'Notify me when this connection has......' press ok again. What does the Network Connection Icon look like?

do you not have the original install cd for the modem software???...i'm quite sure AT&T is Open PPPoE as Verizon is...pick your own user name and password...that would be my first step in fixing the problem...

    Makaveli72,

It seems fine and dandy, but every time I enter a address it re-routs it to the AT&T page.

    A#1,

Sadly, I don't have the original CD since it's been more than 5 years since I've installed it on the computer =[
And yes, I do believe it is Open PPPoE

Get into your router configuration interface and enable PPPoE.

hmm..thats strange. well as i've said before I have no idea how at&ts service is but my own network at home the ISP takes care of the username and password configuration. We the users have no control over that..with that said I believe that the Modem is the issue that needs to be sorted out here and I really can't help with that...and at&t is saying it's the router...

Edit: ^ wirelessman might be on to something in post #5.

    PPPoE is enabled.

I just called Linksys Support. I have to spend $33 for them to help me solve my issue. I'm gonna browse around and ask in different forums =[

find access to a friends or public pc and download the modem software onto a flash drive...can't say it enough here...most DSL providers...provide a modem/router...if it's just a single lan port modem/router...a simple switch is easier to deal with than two routers...if you insist on using a router anyway...you'll need to set the DSL router/modem into bridge mode...this disables DHCP in the modem/router...two network devices trying to handle DHCP addresses at the same time is going to slow data down...and eventually cause a data collision...

I had to change the password to my router to match my modem. It was as simple as that, but no one I called knew about that. I posted on Linksys fourms =D

I'm glad I asked around first before having to pay $33 for such an easy solution!
