I have Comcast Internet, a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, 2.4 GHZ, 802.11g that I intend to utilize in the non-wireless configuration for two separate computers that are only 8 feet apart.
My Motorola SB5101U modem works fine when I have the ethernet cable plugged directly into one computer, but when I run the ethernet cable into the router listed above and then attempt to run a separate ethernet cable into either computer I cannot get service.
My Linksys router model number is WRT54GS, version 6.
Why can I not connect? Please assist.
Thanks
Also, I haven't used this router previous on one of the computers. The router was purchased in 2007. One computer is an apple.

I assume you haven't set up static address for either of the computers, right?
Did you configure your Linksys router or just plugged the cables in?
Check if mac filtering option is enabled on the Linksys if so disable it. Check if DHCP is enabled too if it's not it should be enabled.
When you have both computers connected you say "I cannot get service". What exactly do you mean, you are not able to reach internet or you doesn't even have local connectivity? Can you tell us what IPs the computer obtain when they are both connected? -
Can you connect either of the computers directly to the modem and make them work? Have you cloned the MAC address of the computer that can connect to the router? It's routinely used by ISPs for cable modem services.

Static addresses - no, but I did previous use this router for one of my computers, not sure if old data is on there or not
I did not configure the router, I just plugged it in - I guess this is why I have the newbie term
Is there an installation CD that comes with the router? I haven't used this in at least three years
I am not able to reach internet
When I connect the apple directly to the modem I connect to the internet just fine. I am not able on the other computer. -
Connect the router to the PC which gets internet access when connected directly to the modem.
Log in to the router via 192.168.1.1 and go to Setup/ MAC address clone and press the "clone your PC's mac" button.
Restart the router connect the whole thing back to the modem and see if it works then.
EDIT: So clone apple's MAC address. And please use edit button instead of double-posting. -
Do ISP's no longer require PPPoE authentication configurations on routers?

I think if you clone the MAC address into the router things will work. Years ago when I had Comcast they used mac filtering to control access. Use the PC used to setup the account for this.
