In order to be able to use my laptop around the house, I have just purchased a wireless router (Netgear WGR514) to replace my wired router (Netgear RP614). Is it necessary to remove the previous software & connection details from my main computer before I try to install the new router? I have tried to find the answers on the Netgear website but their Forums do not seem to exist any more.

I have two desktops which I will connect via cables, only the laptop (Dell Inspiron) will use the wireless facility using the built-in wireless card.

I had no difficulties when I installed the original wired router but I would be grateful for any further advice on this process of replacement.

    Thank you.

I don't think you need to change your network settings. You are still getting your ip settings in the router, just a different one. You should not have had to install software previously.
