My bro has had his laptop for about a year now and his wireless worked perfectly with the netgear router i set up. everything's encrypted. today my acer 5672 finally arrived so i set everything up the same way i did on his and for a while it worked alright. then for whatever reason my network stopped showing up in the availible networks list and the connection was severed. i checked my bro's laptop - same thing. so i restarted the router, and everything's back to normal... for about an hour when the same thing happened. now every so often i lose connection and have to restart the router to get back online. any ideas what might be causing this? thanks

ps. i know it's not the distance to the router because my neighbors' much weaker networks are still there.

First: Do you (or a neighbor) have a 2.4 ghz cordless phone? That can be a culprit - any cordless phone will routinely send a signal back to "base", and if your cordless phones are 2.4 ghz, it could cause a repetive drop in the connection.

Second: Try unplugging the router, and letting it (physically) cool down for a couple of hours. Some Netgear routers have issues after they become heat soaked. Google your Netgears model number for more info. If it has started to become flaky, and it *is* heat-related, you'll likely have to either replace the router, or heavily mod the case. Here's a thread over at Netgear:

    Good Luck! :)

Updated firmware, but it still drops. Now I put a double zip-lock of ice and some papertowels under the router, and a book on top to keep it pressed against the ice. Been about 30 mins now without disconnect... I'll keep checking, but the router was really warm on the bottom side when I checked. I guess running 5 machines finally put my poor WGT624v3 over the top
