on your desktop, right click my computer, select remote tab, check allow remote destop connections.

back to your laptop, open remote desktop, grab your computer name, or internal IP addy, and put your username/pass/domain, and you're off to the races.

You may want to check your desktop to make sure that your firewall accepts incoming rdp connections.

Also for internet remote desktop, stick your desktop computer into the DMZ, or set up a route on that port to your internal ip of the desktop on your router.

    That's the quick 2 min version :)

    cheers,

    Mike

plus the machine you are trying to connect to has to have xp pro. Home can connect to a pro machine, but not home--> or pro--> home.

I knew how to get into cmd, but I still don't know how to access my desktop over the internet, I can try it by connecting to my neighbors wireless network.

go to www.whatismyip.com, copy the result and paste it into remote desktop instead of your computer name or internal IP. If you can connect, you can hit it from the outside.. if you can't, then there's no route through your router, or you didn't put your desktop into the DMZ.

    1. Right Click My Computer -> Properties -> Remote -> Enable Remote Desktop (no need to add users unless your account does not have administrator access

    2. Access from home:
    a. Goto computer you want to access & click Start -> Run -> CMD -> Click OK -> IPCONFIG -> Record IP address

    b. From computer you're accessing from, click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection

    c. Enter the IP address of computer you want to access & click OK

    d. Enter username & password of an account that has access to the desktop
*** Note: If user already connected, it will boot the original user off so you can connect with RDP. I believe this is a feature of SP2 so only 1 user can be logged in at one time.

    3. For Accessing over the Internet:
    a. Download this utility. It will monitor any changes in your IP address and email out the new IP address to any address your specify (plus it's free)
    http://www.netikus.net/software/gatewayipmonitor/

    b. Open and forward port 3389 to the computer you want to access (port used for RDP)

    c. From any computer with RDP Client, run Remote Desktop Connection client

    d. Enter IP address from email message received from step 1

    e. Enter username & password of an account that has access to the desktop
*** Note: If user already connected, it will boot the original user off so you can connect with RDP. I believe this is a feature of SP2 so only 1 user can be logged in at one time.

This should get you connected to your computer via RDP over the web.

P.S. Never put your computer on the DMZ, you generally leave your computer open for attack.

    Good luck!
