Suggestions greatly appreciated. Lost HD, had to install new HD and reinstall XP Home Edition. I loaded my wireless drivers and have connected to wireless network, but when I click on IE I do not get an internet connection...just says "the page cannot be displayed"... being a noob, I must have left something out...

Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried this yet, but I will. The lappie is a Sony SZ120P. I am now going back and downloading all of their original SONY install files just to make sure I have covered all of the necessary drivers and such. I don't want to waste anyone's time by not having all this stuff loaded. Once I do this, I will try the direct ethernet connection as you suggested. Please stand by, I have a feeling I may be reaching out after these exercises.

Also make sure you go to the _Sony website and download & install the _Sony updates, particularly updates for the wireless card. Then, make sure that your wireless card is set up to work with your router (e.g., are the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server data entered correctly, if using a static IP, or, is the card set up to get IP automatically from the router via dynamic DHCP? Also, if the router uses encryption, does the laptop have the encryption key, and if the router uses MAC filtering, have you added the MAC of the wireless card to the router's table of permitted MACs?).

umm..I really don't believe that it's neccessary to run that network set-up wizard A#1. Sounds like a DNS issue to me...but first i think u should check to make sure ur drivers are installed properly.

Step 1: Go to start, right click on 'My Computer' select Properties-->Hardware-->Device Manager...Expand the + sign next to Network Adapters. There shouldn't be any yellow symbol or red X next to the Wireless Adapter..if there is that means there's a problem with the device and it may need the proper drivers. Right click on the adapter that mentions ''Wireless" select Properties. Under the device status it should say 'This Device is Working Properly'. If so then that should be fine...you don't need new drivers. (you can move on to Step 1b)

Step 1b: As Wirelessman suggested, plug in the Ethernet cord Directly from the Modem (not Router) into ur Laptop, enable ur LAN Network, disable the Wireless and try to get on the net. You should be able to; If it was stated above that your device was not working properly then you should go and get the proper drivers for ur Wireless card from the Manufacturer's web site and install them now...After you've installed them enable the Wireless Adapter, disable the LAN Adapter and try the net again. If that fixed it then good ur all set; no need to read any further!

If it didn't work then disable the WAN Adapter, re-enable the LAN, left click the LAN adapter in the task tray, go to Properties, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. What u r looking for here is the Preffered DNS server IP address in the bottom section...take note of that IP address and move on to Step 2.

Step 2: The next thing to do is disable the LAN adapter, left click on the wireless network in the task tray and select properties. Scroll down in the list to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select it and click Properties. Enter the IP address of the Preffered DNS server that u took note of from above...leaving the setting above that to 'Obtain IP Address Automatically'...click ok, ok and close....your Internet should be working now!
