    Hi, all.

Well, I tried setting up my ad-hoc wireless connection using the Linksys WUSB54GC USB network adapter. This was semi-successful, but there appear to be problems with this adapter (at least on the Linksys support forums, a lot of folks have problems with it and diagnosing and resolving the issue can be very involved). The network was present on both computers, the signal was strong, and ICS/file/printer sharing was enabled on the desktop. However, I couldn't view shared folders or get on the web, which seems to be a common problem with this adapter.

I've researched as much as I can for a reliable USB network adapter and can't find much info. Unless I want to delve into all of the support forums out there, which seem to fall under the radar of Google/Yahoo, et al.

Does anyone have a rcommendation for a reliable USB wireless network adapter for an ad hoc network?

I have a shared DSL and can't install an additional router and I don't need it - just a simple share between my wired desktop and my notebook for simple file sharing and basic internet searching. Both are running WinXP SP2.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate any assistance you can provide in your experience with a USB wireless network adapter.

    Brent

I set up a friend's network, and I got him an Airlink 108G. I don't remember the model, but I think it was super G 108 Mbps. It works great. It's on a desktop though, so it's not mobile and I can't tell you about the range.

Got a question about USB adapters: doesn't the fact that it's connected through a USB connection slow it down when compared to a PCI adpater?

USB 2.0 should be fast enough to handle most network traffic. Even USB 1.1 is fast enough to connect to the Internet with common DSL connections. I have a USB adapter on a desktop PC and get transfer speeds of about 1 MB/sec when I copy files from one computer to another. That's five times faster than the download speed of a 1.5 Mbps connection to the Internet.
