I just got back home from school, and am trying to connect to the wireless router back home. I try to connect, but after about 3-5 seconds it fails, and gives me this message:

"Wireless association failed because windows did not receive response from wireless router or access point"

First off, I know it's not a problem with my laptop; it works fine back at my apartment. Everyone who visits and tries to connect gets the same problem. I've tried resetting the router, but it doesn't help. Another strange thing; the 3 computers at my parents house have no problem connecting; two running XP and one running Vista (All three by wireless). My PC and every other that people try to connect fails.

The laptop I'm running has Vista, and fails before it even gets to the point where I enter the password for the router.

    P.S. Signal strength is excellent.

Have you tried changing the router's channel? Have you checked to see if MAC filtering is enabled (only the three computers are allowed access based on MAC addresses and all others are denied)?

Have you read the manual that comes with the router?

haha the manual is long gone if we ever had one. It's a westell router that came with our internet service years ago.

Do you have more than 1 location with the same SSID. If so the pass key is probably wrong. This is the main reason you need to change default settings. Go to your location manager and delete the location. Have the loaction manager search for your SSID, connect. When prompted for the key enter the correct one.

Google for the make and model, and/or visit your ISP support website.

Have you tried to Factory reset the wireless router? It goes back to factory defaults after. Possibly to connect after you need to know the IP address to access it by UTP wire in case you can't connect by wireless. Then configure it properly and try again.

Were the other three systems in your parent's house connected to the network at the time you tried to connect yours?
