I have Shaw Cablesystems Canada's as my ISP and I am just wondering if it is possible to get the 500 kb/s upload and 15 mb/s download that is "claimed" by Shaw.

Most everywhere I get around 900kb/s, even going directly through my modem via an ethernet cable.

I am wondering if it is possible to get those speeds as regular.

Theres always overheads like distance and load to the cable node.

My cable connection is rated at 20mb/512kbps (DOCSIS 2.0). Heres what i get:

On a not busy day, i can get up to 19mbps down. Ive never broken past the 500kbps upload though.

Cable systems are like party lines so speeds vary greatly depending on how may users are using it. Your numbers are not that bad, compaired to some I have seen.

Yes if you catch a time that most users are off line and they are not doing any maintance that will impact your speed. ISP do not have control on lines outside of their network. You can use a trace program and see how your getting bounced around. In most cases it will be different every time.

Sites are going to have limitations on their end that will limit your download speed. Your cable provider can't give you 15 Mb/s if download.com's servers can only provide 900 Kb/s.

isp speeds are good only between your house and their first concentrator/node.

no isp in their right mind will guarantee you a constant 'internet' connection speed.

DSL is the closes to having a constant speed, but they vary some but no where like cable does. FIOS is pretty constant in my area.

Yup definetly. I have shaw highspeed.
When downloading from fast servers like download.com or microsoft.com, I can usually get more than 25mbps due to shaw turboboost or something like that.
