Hi, I subscribed to Comcast 16Mbps yesterday and I've scheduled an appointment on Friday. And I decided to get my own modem. I need a wireless router as I'm sharing it with my several other housemates. I browsed through several sites and forums and I noted that Linksys WRT54GL is highly recommended. So I would like to ask for opinions from you guys.. Be quick cause I need to get my router before Friday !

    1) Is that a good modem ?

    2) Which 3rd party firmware is good ?

    Thanks !

It's a good modem if you intend to stick to wireless G. How many components are you going to have on it?

The WRT54GL is a good choice. A little old, but adequate.

It's part of a line of Linksys routers that has been a mainstay in the wireless industry.

I'm planning to stick with Wireless G as I'm just having Intel 5100 Wifi in my XPS 1640. Pretty normal usage (surfing, gaming, downloading). What do you mean by how many components ?

Really ? Glad that I placed that order on Amazon :)

Also I noted that there's this version 1.0 and 1.1. It's not stated in the Amazon. Is there any significant difference ?

Nothing significant between the two version. Just a firmware change.

I have 3 pc's, 2 laptops, a PS3, a Blu Ray player, and a DISH Receiver connected to my router.

Are you just going to have the laptop connected?

The GL version will allow you to install the dd-wrt firmware. This firmware will boost performance of the router.

Changed my mind. Since the comcast technician is coming up to fix the internet at tomorrow, my linksys WRT54GL won't come in time if I were to order it from Amazon. So I am resorted to buy from my comp store in uni. And there are only 2 models left. Which would u guys recommend ?

    Netgear WGR614 and Linksys WRT54G2 ?

Definitely the Linksys. It's a newer model.
