Quick router question

Going from my macbook pro to the Dell SXPS16. Right now I am running the oldschool apple wireless router, and I am wondering if different types of routers affect the internet speed? I have comcast up to 20mbps, and would like to take full advantage of it.

bump anyone? Right now I only get about 10mbps out of the 20 I should be getting with comcast.. I know routers slow it down, just looking to minimize that.

 

Seems like the route for fast is D-Link DIR-655. To maximize internet speed do I need to set it on N only setting? Also, does it matter what wireless card is in my laptop, does that affect the speed? Im buying an sxps16

Will this lap ork with N good?

 

Wireless N for internet sharing/connection will be useful if your internet subscription exceeds wireless G 54Mbps. Setting it to N only is a matter of preference, especially if you don't have other wireless capable device with A/B/G standards.

What really matter is the wireless adapter you chose.

Mixed performances have been reported with Intel WiFi Link 5100 card. But most will agree that Intel WiFi Link 5300 card is better.

 

Damn, do you know if I can just buy the wifi link 5300, is it easy to swap or is it internal?

 

Don't worry, just get it from eBay. Maybe, it would likely be the same money you spend as Dell would have charged you for changing your configuration from 5100 to 5300, instead, you will have both 5100 and 5300 cards.

Yes, it's located internal. But swapping WiFi card is easy in Dell's notebook. Phillips screwdriver is all you need and no more than 5 minutes required. At least you can open the online service guide if you're not so familiar with it.

Be sure to get half-height version of 5300 card. And watch out for Engineering Sample cards.
