    hi guys,
so i have a linksys wrt54gs router (with speedboost) and i just found out today, while checking out my router settings, that my dad has not upgraded the firmware for 2 years! it is still on firmware ver. 1.06 and the recent upgrade is ver. 7.5!! so i was just wondering if i have to go and download and install all the previous versions of upgrades, or can i simply make the jump from 1.06 to 7.5?

    help is appreciated :)

    thx

EDIT: just tried upgrading from 1.06 to 7.5 and it said "UPGRADE ARE FAIL" so i guess i cant jump from 1 to 7 then :(

or is my router just messed up?

    Hi.

You must have done something wrong or it`s not the right firmware as you should be able to flash straight to the newest version! , unless linksys are weird.

    Regards

Yes, you should be able to apply the 7.5 version direction, since you're not *upgrading* the software. You're simply overwriting the previous firmware. The current version doesn't even come in to it, any more than you have to worry about which version of Windows you have before you format your harddrive.

If the update failed, there's another reason. Doublecheck that the firmware is for the correct router model.

ohh i see what i did wrong! i went to the v7 version of the router, probably a newer released version by linksys. my router version is v4, so i download the v4 firmware. now hopefully it works

EDIT: hmm, i still get the "UPGRADE ARE FAILED" message. and i'm sure i downloaded the right one for my router. am i supposed to reset or disconnect or anything from the router first?

You need to make sure you have the correct firmware for the hardware revision. But, IMHO, you should have left the router alone. The old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is certainly true here - usually a router that belongs to the parents doesn't need any tweaking, especially if it is already running just fine.
