This may be a dumb question, but now that I have wireless on my laptop, is there anywhere in public places where it is just broadcast free. No need to sign up and pay for the useage time. Or does earthlink (who I have an account with) do public wireless somewhere?

There are 1000's of free public wireless access points, you just need to go to google and search for a site that lists them and then find some in your area. Also about 2/3 of all home wireless access points are wide open and unprotected. In fact I keep mine open on purpose so that others can share my connection if needed(share and share alike)I do have file sharing turned off and behind a firewall so that my systems cannot be accessed. I had it setup like this for 5 months and as long no one abuses it it will remain open to the public. As far as earthlink goes, they are in the business to make money, so there is not going to be any free access from them.

Another site to check out: http://www.wififreespot.com/

Be forewarned, though, the information on these sites is not always current. I hunted for a free hotspot in Spain this summer (address pulled off a web site like the one above) and it didn't exist.

You can also get little devices that allow you to snoop for free signals without walking around with an open notebook--which tends to attract curious looks from bystanders (especially in ancient Spanish towns). [ :)]
