I'm trying to set up an ad hoc network between a new Windows 7 Home desktop and an older Windows XP laptop but with no luck. (I tried a router in the past but it was so unsuccessful and complicated I'd rather just avoid it this time).

Prior to getting the new Win7 desktop computer I shared the internet connection with the laptop through an ethernet ad hoc network from a Win XP desktop. I would prefer to do that again but I have read that Win7 doesn't permit ethernet ad hoc networks, only wireless. So today I attempted a wireless connection and the setup from the Win 7 side seems successful however it says there is no other user. The laptop has its wifi adapter installed and is currently running but doesn't recognize a signal. Both are within 30 feet of each other. If anyone can offer advice on how to get this wireless ad hoc connection working (or how to set up an ethernet connection) it would be appreciated. Thanks!

What version of XP are you running on the laptop?
