Hi, ive just bought an Inspiron mini 9. I have wirelss and I am managing to connect to the router - its definately showing that im connected, but then when i click on Internet Explorer, a page comes up saying "this page cannot be displayed". On the other hand, when i use the cable from the router, it brings up the google home page straight away. Is there anything i can do to solve this so i can use my netbook without having to plug the cable in? Dell have said its a software problem and that it will cost £59.00 to fix. Just wondering if anyone has any advice to offer me first please?

    A netbook novice

Could be a software problem. Have you tried abondoning the network and trying to rejoin? You may have entered a bad wep/wpa key and it won't let you in. Ummm, what else, enter your router IP should be something like http://1xx.xxx.xx.x. Password is probably admin with the username also admin. See if you can config from there.

Also did dell sell you the router? If you just received it, then you should be able to return it at no cost?

Yes ive tried your suggestions, but to no avail. Also Dell have told me my warranty only covers me for hardware issues, and theres no chance of a return.

Well don't rule out yet that it is only software. It could be a problem with your wireless card. Do you have any friends or wireless networks you know of that you can try to connect to?

Yes, I connected to my friends wireless tonight, and it was the same - no problem using the cable, but without it it came up with the "this page connot be displayed", yet the connection was definately there. Ive even tried removing Norton anti virus to se if that helps but to no avail.

What is your wireless card? Have you tried updating it? It is looking like a bad card rather then bad software or network. So you might want to call them and ask the policies on it.

Btw, thats jacked up if the software that comes with product doesn't work and they tell you they only are responsible for the hardware. They should be responsible for everything that comes out of that box, if it doesn't work it doesn't work. I may not recommend HP's after hearing this bad customer service.

    Hi gerry,

I typed in all that stuff you said and im reporting back as follows:

    IP : Packets sent = 4. recieved = 4, Lost = 0.

    Gateway : Request timed out. Packets sent = 4. recieved = 0. Lost = 4.

And it was the same for the DNS.

Does this make any sense to you?

First off, I assume you have the 5530 HSPA Mini-Card. Do you have the latest driver, vista compatible?

Have you placed your cursor over the network icon in your sys tray, to see if it says: Local & Internet" or just local?

Have you tried opening the " Network & Sharing Center" after you "connect" wirelessly, to check the status of your wifi connection? If there's a red X anywhere in the setup, double click on it and it will give you some options for resolving the problem.

let us know how it goes!!!

Hi, thanks for your suggestions. Its XP not Vista. I did notice that it was only on a local connection rather than local and internet. Im trying to sort this out now to see if it helps by using the network setup wizard. Is that right? Im sorry, im not very pc literate

yes, it sounds like you've got what they call "limited connectivity".

did you open the network center and try clicking on the red X. It's my guess that you're connecting to the router, local, but not hitting the internet.

Yes, try the network wizard and post back.
