    Problems Conecting Notebook to Router in home.

    I just purchased an EZ4949us HP Notebook and I am having trouble connecting the wireless router in our home.

    I am following the instructions in the manual and when I go to the available wireless router..it says that it is not secure.
    Does this mean I need to go to the main computer and make it secure? before I try to download the router to my New Notebook?

    will I need to remove the wireless router and reload it again and make it secure?

    when I download it now onto the new notebook without it being secure..I cannot get on the internet at all.

    Anyone who can explain this to me would be great...My husband got someone to connect his laptop to the same router over a year ago.....and his works fine...

    The security that Windows is talking about is whether or not encryption is enabled on your wireless network. If your router is not using encryption it is easier for unauthorized users to hijack your wireconnection for their own uses. If you can find the manual for your router it should be able to tell you how to set up encryption if you want. However that's not what is preventing you from getting online after you connect to the router in its current configuration.

    The first question is whether or not you are getting an IP address. After you connect to the router, hold down the windows key and press 'r.' A box will come up, type 'command' and press enter. Then type 'ipconfig' and press enter. Do the same thing on your husband's laptop while it is connected to the router and see if the results of ipconfig are similar. (Don't post the numbers here, I don't want anybody abusing them.) If they're not, let me know and I'll give you different advice. If they are, on your laptop type 'tracert www.slashdot.org' and press enter. If that produces a list of servers then your internet connection is fine and there is a problem with your browser, if it says things are timing out, then you have other problems. Let me know.
