    Problem with accessing internet through Router

    my uncle just game me a linksys router WRT54GS v5 and i am trying to set it up to my desktop with cable modem so i can go online wireless with my hp dv6000 laptop. here's the problem, during the linksys setup once i connect the modem to the router and continue the setup or installation it says no internet connection detected!... so i tried disconnecting the router and connected the modem back to my desktop (to see if it was the modem) but i was able to go online, so i reconnected the modem to the router again and all the lights that are suppose to light up are lit but it still says no internet connection detected!??....and also my laptop can connect to the router but also has problems going on the internet......can someone help me out please!

    This may not be THE problem, but my earlier version of the WRT54GS is very picky about the order in which I power on the router and cable modem.

    Try plugging the router into the cable modem and powering on the modem. Then disconnect the power to the cable modem for about a minute or so (may be less, but this usually works for me). Plug the cable modem back in, and after a few minutes, check the router's status page to see if it is showing a WAN IP address that is acquired from your cable modem.

    Most cable ISP control access by MAC address. Make sure you are set the router to DHCP unless the gave you a static IP. Then clone the MAC address of the PC used to setup the account into the router's. This is usually found under WAN or internet advanced settings. This way when the ISP see the router come on line it will have the MAC address of the PC and allow the connection.
