I am running vista ultimate 32 bit on dell xps 1530. I am in the middle east right now and the internet i have to use involves the following: I connect a wireless device to my Ethernet. I do not go through any router. The line is suppose to be a 2mbs line. Even though it is broadband it dials the connection and i enter a password and user name. I am having problems with speed and stability. When doing a speed test it shows up pretty fast at 220 kbs sec. How ever in realty it is not this fast when downloading. I fluctuates wildly from 15kbs to 100+ kbs with in seconds on the same download. I can ping a server at 110 and ping it again 1 second latter to find is jumped to 770. What can i do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Please clarify your network setup. You have a wireless card connecting to internet through a cellular network?

I have a device i think its a cable modem which recives a WLAN signal if not some sort of city wide wirless internet signal. It is connected to the ethernet port of the laptop. I guess its like a cell network card only much bigger. Its about 8x8 inches.

I'm familiar with WiMAX, is incredible that you have it there and we are still on trial here in the US.

Well, WiMAX is suppose to work on different frequency bands, from 2 to 11GHz, and will deliver max 114Mbps. If you are very far from the base station, and that the frequency used is in the high end, then the modulation used will be less efficient and your data throughput will suffer big deal.

I have all lights lit on the device indicating the strongest signal. When i use the following speed test http://www.umniah.com/NR/exeres/35F0AB8D-E2F1-48F2-AADE-28ED7E5021F5.htm i get a constant stream at 220kbs the problem is when i download somthing for real from other sites its just not that fast. all i want to do is reslove this and the stability issue. I dont understand why when i ping servers it fluctioates wildly from one second to the next. I think is is a conflict in vista or some setting. Do you have any ideas how to reslove this? i dont think range is an issue givin the signa str and the speed test.

Well, your signal is strong but 220kbps is way too low for WiMAX spec, don't you agree? Anyway, I don;t think is Vista, it could be so many things, like latency in the network causing the instability.

200 is what the told me to exspect, its only a 2mbs line. I see, so if its latency in the network, theres nothing i can do about that?

Nothing, is the network you are connecting with. But it could also be WiMAX itself, it is a new technology, as I said is under trial here in the US, so it is not ready yet. I suggest you bring your laptop to a hot spot and verify if you experience the same phenomena.
