I jsut got my Aopen 1557 from Cyberpower...the wireless works fine but i want to transfer games over to it...and since wifi is slower i dont want to wait 2 hours. When i plug the cat 5 in and configure the connection i get nothing...it assigns me with some bogus IP and i have no connection, i try to manually set up the IP and still nothing, everything plugs in and wireless works fine..so does the hub...best part of all....i can get on the hub and change settings...but i can't ping it..which still doesnt make sense to me..firewall is down as well any help? thanks

OK, this is a little confusing to me so let's walk through a few things and we'll try to help if we can.

First, what O/S do you have? We'll assume it is a recent windows flavor for now so go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network Connections and tell us all the devices that are listed there.

Next, when you plug into the hub, does the link light come on? Typically there is a light that comes on to show you have a physical connection. Does your hub have these lights and is it coming on?

Be sure the port you are hooking into on the switch is not labelled "uplink". That port is only for daisy chaining switches together.

When you say your switch, is it the typical router/switch combo model? Is there a router on the network at all to be able to automatically assign IP addresses? When you manually assign addresses, are you doing so to all machines? If not, are you making sure the assigned addresses is on the same network as the other devices?

I don't understand what you mean that you can change settings on the switch but can't ping it. Are you entering an IP address in a browser window and pulling up the switch configuration utility but you can't ping it? Or do you have some configuration utility you are running locally?

The firewall is down as well? I'm not following you here. What firewall do you have? And what do you mean when you say that it is down?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but we need to have a better understanding of the environment to be able to make suggestions for what the problem might be.

Hey thanks for responding, i would answer all your questions but it's useless now. I installed Windows XP pro and everything worked fine...no hitch. I'm guessing it was somthing with the factory install of XP home, i prefer pro anyways. Thanks though.
