Since I spend more time outside of my home than in, I've been debating signing up for a mobile broadband contract. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc all seem to have the same deal, $60 a month for 5GB. Basics aside, are there any peculiarities to consider? I'm mostly concerned about speed, but coverage is important as well. I'd also prefer if they make it easy to monitor data useage, have 4G service on the rise, and give a free usb/express card.

Hey anothergeek, I would recommend Sprint, even though I think many will tell you to stay away from them. They seem to have the fastest data available and best network in my experience.

Also, the number 1 reason I recommend Sprint is their customer service. Sure they are hard to work with, but it is easy to get things out of them.

Sign up, then call and get perks such as a 10-20 percent off each month or credit for signing on or something.

If you are good at dealing with customer service representatives and figuring out things online, Sprint is the way to go!

I had Sprint for 3 years as a truck driver and it got better and better for most of those years up until Verizon bought Alltel. Verizon and Sprint focused most of their EVDO upgrades in major metropolitan areas while Alltel was mostly rural area coverage. Sprint and Verizon both had roaming agreements with Alltel and each other. As a truck driver that uses the internet alot traveling 48 states, I can tell you that Sprints service fell off when Verizon bought Alltel.

I had an unlimited plan with Sprint for 59.99 a month but all of their new customers fall under the limit. Old customers keep their unlimited status as long as they remain customers. Usage can be checked anytime by clicking usage.

If you are in a major metro area either one is fine--if travel alot would definitely recommend Verizon.
