right my mate has just got a computer (his first) with the following specs:

    1.8 Gzh processor
    1GB RAM
    7500 SL ??? graphics card
    windows Vista

he has got Broadband with Sky and its meant to 8MB (i know that might not be what you get) but his download speed is like 14.5kbps max and i was wondering what could cause this, could it be becuase he has 1GB ram with Vista? or a bad router (though this has been changed as previous one randomly cut out, but that had weak download speeds as well)

so any idea as to waht could it be?

should he move to a different ISP?
    Upgrade RAM?
    replace router?

Some servers are very slow. google speedtest and try it.

If still same, Try Tuneup utilities 2008. It will adjust all settings automatically.

Cant be router unless u are using the 1990s modem, even then its faster than 14kbps. I will say its the TCP/ Network card settings etc...

    Hi.

    try this speedtest

    http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

I suppose he has DSL filters on all his telephones in his house.

Has he a long extension from his main phone connection to his router, it could be bad cabling.

You line speed usually depends on your distance from your local exchange.

And the quality of my connection to your exchange.

Get him to unplug all the router connection and re-connect.

Sky uses NETGEAR routers, same as the model i am using now, tell hime to log into the router bios and check his connection speed.

If all the above fails, contact Sky and get them to do a line test.

    Regards

    John.

Cablenut is the only optimizer that I have found that has worked for me. Get the optional pack for more settings.

Ask him to read on the router the model and brand, if he has an internal nic, then see either the computer invoice part list or ask him to run an application like EVEREST that will identify the nic for him.

For the nic, actually you might not need the EVEREST application, you may also go to the device manager and look for the network adapter. Go to the start and right click on my computer and click on device manager, then click on network adapter, you should be able to see the name of the nic adapter.

Sometimes a simple restart of the computer helps.

    Is someone stealing his wireless?

Right, optimizers are not advisable to be used on any computer.

Well Cablenut is a legitimate cable optimizer and gets good results with XP, but Vista has self adjusting RWIN so there's no need for programs like Cablenut

For an 8Mbps DL to be ~15kbps, something must be wrong at the router or nic, no optimizer application is going to help.
