I am trying to establish a connection between my work computer the
hotels unsecured open wireless network. The computer is an HP with the
Intel 2200BG wifi card updated to driver 12.2.0.0. This computer is XP pro
with SP2. I called the hotel front desk, they reset their router which I could
confirm because as they did so, my personal computer lost connectivity.

The hotel's "IT" dept is not able to tell me anything and resetting the router is the best they can offer. I tried Microsoft KB917021 but it did not help. when I type "ipconfig" at a command prompt, it shows the Ethernet and Wireless but states both are "Media disconnected".

The Windows wireless manager WZC shows 17 wireless networks within range and the hotels open wireless signal is listed. If I try connecting, Windows opens a dialogue that says "Please wait while Windows connects to (Hotel SSID) then it says Waiting for the network. A scrolling bar at the bottom moves from left to right and it stays like this for exactly 71 seconds before this window closes and no connection is established.

The Ethernet connection will work fine. Interestingly enough, if I select one of the other 17 wireless networks available that are secured, make up some kind of key, it does the exact same thing as when trying to connect to the open network. I find it odd that I am not prompted for the correct key.

    Suggestions?

I would begin by deleting all current wireless networks windows has saved (sorry, you will have to set these up again later).

I would then uninstall the network adapter, reboot, and let windows reinstall.

    Gerry, thanks for the suggestion.

I just tried it and no change. Deleting the list of wireless connections was
no big deal, 99.8% of them we're hotels and can be redone if I go back.

    EDIT:

Well, after the window dialogue closed and it went back to the list of wireless
networks, I almost thought it was going to connect. It stated "Acquiring network
address" in the corner by the strength meter but that went away and still no connection.
