Hello iam looking for some opinions performance wise form the DIR-655 router as i just received my HDX16 and iam looking for something really reliable with good speed and excellent distance. This is my first time useing a laptop as ive always used my desktop so its a pretty big change for me.Hopefully everything turns out ok for me.Some of the specs on my HDX16 are 2.80ghz 3GB DDR system memory and 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive.

Dont know if this will help my router/internet speeds on my laptop but i have 8Mbps from comcast with an extra burst of speed up to 16 Mbps when you’re downloading large files like videos and games. Please let my know if iam good to go or if iam missing anything.

    Thanks. Adrian

I was thinking of upgrading to this router from the DIR-615.

My main concern is the range and strength of the N signal.

So your implying the DIR-655 has better range and signal? Cause from the research ive done on the web it looks like it has great range/speed.

    Thanks for responding.

The speed on the DIR-655 is great. the router can handle a huge load. Range is good as well. Ive been 3 blocks away and got internet. On my ipod touch  (which is less powerfull as laptop WIFI cards) So im sure i could be at least 4-5 blocks down and get internet from my router.

Its a great product, i greatly recommend it to you.

I have the DIR-655 and think it's a fantastic router. It definitely beats anything I've used in the past. You can buy the D-Link ANT24-0230 Xtreme N 2.4GHz Antenna and use it to extend the range of the router (3 ft cable means you can put the antennas high up on the wall). I use both and have fantastic range. I get no less than 90% strength in all areas of my house.

The latest firmware adds SharePort features. You can connect USB devices to the router (printer, MFD, scanner, hard drive, etc) and access them as if they were connected directly to your computer. Finally, a use for the USB port on the router!

If you visit the D-Link support site, you'll find instructions on how to flash firmware, what fixes are included in the firmware releases, and read the SharePort manual.

D-Link is complete and utter krap.

I had an older DIR-615 and had no problems.

Setup was easy and quick, in minutes actually and it never, I do mean never, needed a reboot, not once, ever.

Stupid me decides to upgrade so I sold my DIR-615 to a neighbor and I
bought the DIR-825 from eBay. Complete garbage.

Took F_O_R_E_V_E_R to setup, it kept dropping my Linksys VOIP
modem and requires a reboot every hour. This router just plain suks.

If anyone here happens to like it, please PM me, I will GLADLY sell it.

This aside, can anyone recommend one that isn't Belkin or D-Link
that has dual band and gigabit ethernet ports.

    I'm looking for one now...

Adrian, if you want fast video and low lag time for gaming. Look for a router that has support for QoS - quality of service. These router allows you to set priority on video and game packets. Giving them higher priority will push them out of the queue faster.

As for brand and model. It's all down to personal preference and your luck with a particular brand. You will never find a brand or model that has no cons. Internally they are all pretty much the same. A few units will be 5% better at the limit. Otherwise, performance is all relative and depends on your environment. What works for one house doesn't mean it will be the same at another house. Heck even in the same house it may not perform the same every hour.

So my advice? Find the best deal with all the features you need. Branding and packaging are all about marketing.

The DIR-825 doesnt score as well in reviews as 655. Its a different router, different setup disks and firmware.

On my DIR-655, the setup was probably 5-7 minutes including seting up WPA.
In my opinion, thats not bad.

On a Belkin i tried, it wouldnt even do it. Router would power on, and not be detected or connect, not even realize that something waas plugged into the WAN or Ethernet ports. Just a blinking power light. I returned next day after hours of useless time trying to fix/figure out.

On my prevouisly owned TRENTnet 452BRP (i think it was)
    It took about 10-13 minutes.

    I was wondering the same.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with D-Link, their suggestion?

    Firmware update.

I updated and so far, so good but time will tell.

The only way to keep my Linksys Pap2 from dropping connection
was to add it to the DMZ.

    Not a solution I like.
