    Here is my setup: Cable modem, Linksys WAP Router (BEFW11S4), PC connected to Router (my "server"), and 2 IBM Thinkpad laptops connected wirelessly. This wireless router is 802.11b, while one of my older Thinkpads (T23) has PCMIAA B card, and newer T42 has built-in B/G support. So, I'm running at B wireless rate through the house. My main concern is wireless communication between laptop and PC "server". Before I had any security encryption enabled, everything was running super fast. I was able to move files between computer, stream mp3s, etc. at a decent speed. But, with a number of neighbors running their wireless routers, I decided to enable WEP-64.

    After that, transfer speed slow down to unbearable. It takes forever to move anything between laptop and PC. The internet connection is almost as fast, but that transfer speed is just killing me. Sometimes, I just copy CDRW between computers to move files.

    Any suggestions what is happening here? Is there something I forgot to enable/disable? It just doesn't make any sense for WEP encryption to slow down connection that much :(

    Hmm, just updated BEFW11S4 driver, and it seems to be working better. Any other suggestions?

    Well you should be able to run at 802.11g, isn't there a setting for B+G? Also, switch your channel to 1 or 11 if you've not done that, to get away fromt he default of 6 everyone else has.

    The advantage is like I said, less clutter on that channel since that's the factory default. You should move as far away from 6 as possible, hence the 1 and 11 recommendation.

    The T23 isn't THAT old so it doesn't seem as though CPU load could be an issue. If there are several other wireless networks operating in the area, Brian might be right that it is just interference and the WEP relationship might just be a coincidence. I'd suggest turning WEP on and off a couple of times and measure what effect that has on your performance. I also like his idea of changing the channel to attempt to avoid interference. For technical reasons I won't get into here (but that are covered in earlier threads) his suggestion of 1 or 11 is right on target.
