At the moment I have a wired network.
Downstairs there is the modem, at the place where our internetconnection (cable) comes into our house.
At the attic, the router (a Linksys), of which 2 wires goes to the first floor (one to my room and one to my brothers room). At my room I have a simple switch, where my desktop and current notebook are connected to.
For my new notebook I need an accesspoint. The problem is that I don't really know what the best place is for the AP (I don't have experiences with wireless yet): Is it OK to connect it directly to the router, at the attic, or is it better to make some room for the AP to plug it in at the switch in my own room?

Well if you are doing 3 floors of the house I would put it in the middle of the house...and on the first floor, that way you will have access anywhere in the house.

    My $.02 anyways :)

Reasonable suggestion - as there are many variables that can affect wireless signal - some of which you can control (2.4 wireless phones / proximity to microwaves / direction of Antenna's on WAP / etc ) there are also many you cannot control (house construction / network interference from neighboor devices WAP,s Phones / etc )

I have a two story house with a full basement (so 3 levels) - my WAP is on the Top Floor and I receive an excellent signal throughout the house. I also have High Gain 7dBi Antenna's.

The point is experiement - you will find an optimal deployment place.

    Good Luck.......................dy

I'd have agree with the previous statements...Although placement in the middle or top floor is recommended, experimentation could be your best friend.

I once shared high-speed internet access with a neighbor whose access point was on the third floor of our apartment building. I lived in the first floor directly underneath. The connection worked just fine with a decent wireless card.

    Ah, thanks!
These 2 places are the only possibilities, but we will try (although I have to wait for the notebook to come first :)).
