I own a WRG614v7 router and a PS3. My PS3 can connect to my AP just fine. But for some reason when I try to play Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer, it freezes the game for about a minute or so and then I am disconnected from the PSN along with a DNS error and the game unfreezes. I'm assuming the freeze has something to do with connecting to the matchmaking service. Also, after this happens my router pretty much crashes. All other connections to the router drop and I can't reconnect until I reset my modem and router. I looked around the internet and tried so many things [manually setting up the internet connection, putting PS3 in DMZ mode, turning off UPnP, etc.]. Still, no luck.

What is also important to take note is that this only happens with Modern Warfare 2, I've played online successfully ModNation Racers and Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas? I'm quite frustrated. Thanks for any help in advance.

Has this just started or is this the first time you have tried this game on line? In any case it sounds like your probably overheating your router so it locks up. I use to see this a lot but routers have gotten better over the last several years. Games generally require a lot of symintianous connections too which taxes the router performance too.

Only suggestion would try a wired connection first if you could to see if the AP in the router is over heating and bringing down the router. Your only other choice and best choice would be to replace the router. If you go that way stay away from Belkin products. The test good but do not last very long if they work at all out of the box. Just my experience with Belkin has been very bad, have yet to found one that worked right and lasted more than a couple of weeks.

This started the first time I tried this game. I got it to work once by retrying over and over, but it has never worked since. I haven't done a wired connection because the PS3 is in a position that makes it difficult, but I guess I'll just move it for testing.

Your overheating hypothesis is very interesting as I always have my router either on top or under my modem [they are similar in size and stack upon each other perfectly] and my router always feels very warm when I touch it. I hope internals haven't been damaged. I took them off each other and the router feels alot cooler I'll try it again and see what happens.

UPDATE: I don't think it's overheating, let my modem and router both shut down, cool down, and still same problem. Next I'll try a wired connection. Router still working fine for every other device connected to it, but connection drops when error occurs.

You only need to over heat 1 chip in the router/switch/AP to bring it down. It could even be a ram chip over heating. One way to determine if its a chip is open it up so you can spay cooling on the chips.

If you don't have the latest Firmware, update it. You never now for sure what bugs they fixed.

    Another update:

Tried a wired connection. Went from Modem to Router to PS3 and it worked. No error or anything and played a couple rounds of Modern Warfare 2. How can wired work, but not wireless?

Note: I have updated to latest firmware.

The wireless transmitter and reciever really heat up when used. With most NB you can find the wireless just by where the heat is coming from.
