    Hi Everyone

I've recently created a internet connection to my laptop using an ex-telstra 2wire 2071A modem + a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router. Unfortunately, none of my online games are working. I've tried Unreal Tournament and Star Wars Battlefront which freeze when you try to connect, Freelancer which just sits there trying to connect. I've also tried Soldat on my desktop (which uses the same wireless point) which sometimes plays for ages but mostly just freezes after a few minutes. I've tried deactivating both the modem and router firewalls and my computer firewalls, creating the required firewall exceptions and it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a hardware firewall, go to the routers ip address and deactivate it or allow exceptions.

I did deactivate it. Made no difference. I also followed the instructions on Portforward.com to enable exceptions and applied this to all my firewalls, no joy.

And you're using the latest firmware for your WRT54GL?

Make sure the 2wire is in bridge mode, so it will pass every thing down to the linksys. My guess is the 2wire is a router too, and it's NAT/SPI firewall is killing it. Check to see what kind of IP address the Linksys has. Public or Private?

I should mention that the 2wire is also connected to another computer via USB. Its not causing the problem, because most of the time the other computer is off but if i switch the modem to bridge wont that kill the other computer's connection?

How do i determine if the linksys is using a public or private address?

    Public IP's will be 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x and 192.168.x.x

I do not know if it will impact the other pc. I have 1 client with a 2wire but I don't remember. But he does not play games either.

Public address on the linksys and the 2wire. Would it help if they were both the same... er forgot the word but you know both 192.168.x.x (The 2wire was set to 10.0.x.x by default). Yeah, the 2wire can also be set as a router.

Is this the WAN port IP? I would guess Public on Linksys and private on 2wire. If this is the case you are trying to go through a double NAT/Firewall. Not going to work with gaming/port forwarding. You will need to put the 2wire in Bridge mode and see it that works or Put the router in a DMZ. Then every thing should pass down to it.

Ok, I'm attaching two images showing the router and modem configuration. I'm that confused I dont know what's what. I hope you can make sense of this! About the only thing i can tell is that the router address (status on the right) is the same as the WAN address on the modem. The modem did this itself (a message came up when i first plugged in the router).

Please bear with me on this. I've worked out why the router cant see the modem initially because when the modem reconnects its getting assigned a WAN IP which is different to the router IP which apparently has to be the same to get internet access. I've set the modem to bridged mode. Hopefully this works.

EDIT: Didnt work, but here's something (probably nothing). The default gateway setting on the router is always one below in the last octet, but what is this address refering to? Its not the modem because thats using the same WAN IP as the router. Could this be what's causing the problem?

Fixed it! Had to configure the forwarding section on the modem which in turn caused the router to set the correct gateway address. Thanks so much for your help blue68f100! Hopefully i can repay the favour someday (how does the end of microsoft sound? lol).

Glad everything is up and running. I know what it's like when things don't work right.
