How can I remove all forms of security from my wireless connection/router/and whatever else pertains to this?
Basically I want to wipe everything clean and start from sctatch.
That is i want to keep all my wired settings and just deal with the wireless.
Is there a way to erase whatever I had and start fresh?

The easiest and only sure way is a reset to factory settings. This will also take the wired side down to. Just make sure you have all of your setting recorded some where.

Most routers this is done by holding the reset down for 10 sec. Some require the reset button to be held down while powering up.

As for your PC. Just delete the wireless connections.

don't have any settings recorded anywhere....Is there somewhere I can find them?
Now the password works but I get a message saying that It couldn't find an IP address.
I deleted the wireless connection from my laptop but after it found the router again and I clicked on it, I was prompted to enter a password....so I enter what I think is the password to the best of my memory....It says I am connected.....The I get another message saying that I have little or no connectivity and that it failed to find an IP that it liked.
How do I reset to factory settings....if I am reqiured to use the installation disk that the ISP sent me to reinstall/setup my internet connection then I'm in trouble because I haven't know its location in a long time.

uh... I would recommend going to your router manufacturer's website and looking up relevant documentation.

they probably also have a "quick start" guide to get you going.

Most routers have a function that allow your mac address of a pc to be cloned into the router. Do this with the PC used to setup the account.

Limited and no connectivity shows up when the pass-key is not correct, too.

I have a router/modem from westell which is designed specifically for BellSouth..........Because of this the manufacuters website is useless.....I tried calling BellSouth but they gave me the usual runaround and wound up trying to sell me another routermodem.

How does one have the mac address cloned into the router?

Forget about cloning the MAC address, I think what you want to do is restore the router to it's factory defalut settings. What's the router's model number??? There's usually a small reset at the back of the router, does your router look like the one in the picture below? if yes, then look at the red small dot in the left side, insert a toothpick inside the red hole till you feel it's pushing a button insdie it ( while the router is tunred on ), hold it for 10 seconds. This should restore the router to it's factory settings, at this point it shouldn't ask you for a password anymore which indicate it's been restored to the factory settings and it should work fine now, if it still asks for password then hold the reset button for a longer time. Download the routers manual and it should say how to properly reset the thing.

Thanks sanpabloguy.....I now have wireless......it's been a logn and tormenting 6 months but everythings fine now.......I guess when that lightning storm passed through it wiped the WEP key because I just entered one of the keys I found by using launchmodem and now it works.....now all I have to do is re-enter the keys into my mom's laptop and maybe the system in my room.

Thanks to all the forum members who have put up with me on this and for all the help you have given.....I only wish it didn't take so many threads and post......once again thanks....you've been most helpful.

    Hi Phillip,
I don't know about your specific model router, but if it works via Ethernet try and access the router's internal webpage. I don't know how much you know about PCs so apologies if any of this sounds patronising:
    1) Doubleclick on your LAN icon on bottom right hand corner of the screen. (If it's not there then under "Network Connections" in "Control Panel", rightclick on the "Local Area Connection", "Properties" and then click the option 'Show icon in taskbar when connected' (or something similar as mine is in Spanish!) then OK.)
    2) Under the "Support" tab, make a note of the Gateway IP address (3rd one down). Usually routers here in Spain come with a predetermined 192.168.1.1.
    3) Open your web browser and type in the same IP address.
    4) If asked for a username & password (best consult user manual if you have one) then you enter the default password. Common ones used here in Spain (username then password are listed in that order) are...
admin admin, admin 1234, admin [blank], admin root, [blank] admin, [blank] 1234, [blank] root, root root, root admin, root 1234, root [blank], 1234 1234
    5) You should then hopefully see your router's configuration page. These pages differ from router to router (obviously) but they normally follow a general pattern. One important thing to remember with many of them is that you have to press the option to "Save & Reboot" for it to be stored as the system default, otherwise if you have a power surge or failiure then you lose the personal settings.

Also I would advise buying a surge protector (not expensive) or a UPS (uniterruptable power supply) to protect your little investment.
Hope this is of some use. Cheers. Chris.

I have a USP already.......the computer wasn't even on at the time.......though the router/modem was.
I'm not sure if I went to the wrong location or if my computer is just different but here's where I wound up folowing your instructions......BTW....i couldn't find anything that looked like what was described from step 2 on.

"Local area connection" right click status, the advanced
It will tell you what your gateway is.

Enter the "http://(gatewayIP" That should gain you Access to the router.

So when you said that you tried the last suggestion and it didn't work, what do you mean? If you mean that you can't find the IP address, then try this:

START, RUN, then type CMD, and press OK.
You should see a DOS window.
    Type IPCONFIG then press enter.
Make a note of the IP address and follow my previous instructions.
Let me know how you get on.

On the two screenshots for Wireless Security, one shows the Wireless Security is WEP, and the other says Wireless Security - disabled.

Have you tried enabling WEP security and putting in the hex code?

How bizarre! Does your laptop even see the "HOUSENET" with the security disabled? With no password it should connect like a dream. My final solution (and not very original one) would be to take both your laptop and the router to where you bought the router and see if they can shed any light on the situation. Maybe the router itself is faulty. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help to you Phil. Chris.

Well.....I sort of did that....that is to say I called up bellsouth.....my DSL provider.....and they are now sending me a new one....should arrive in a day or two........I hope this new one works and that no more lightning storms pass through.....it seems that when all that static electricty..or what ever it's made of....totally scrambles the router.

You could install a UPS surge protector on your dsl line and computer. Static elect is a very high voltage source and will knock out most any electronic hardware. If this is generated by carpet. I would suggest treating it with some anti-static protector. I have a static discharge pads on one of my computer desk. Apples use to be extremely sensitive to static.
