I have a WRT54G version 2 wireless router, and it seemed to have possible either crapped out on me, or is trying to joke with me. or i'm dumb. one of those 3 things.

i have the modem (BEFCMU10 version 3) connected to the router right now, and then my laptop connected via ethernet cable to the router.

but, interestingly, it seems my router is completely bypassing the whole "routing" mechanism i thought these things were designed to do, and is basically acting as a connector to my modem.

under my LAN connection status, it reads a normal IP address rather than 192.168.1.1xx.

also, i can connect the modem to one of the 4 ports that the router is supposed to connect 4 computers to, and connect my laptop to the back where it says ethernet, and the internet works, producing the same IP address as my modem.

if you're confused with what i'm talking about, there is one port in the back that is for the modem connection, and then there are 4 ports that provide a split so i can route the connections to up to 4 computers via ethernet cable.

i can interchange which ports i plug them into and still get internet, regardless of which port it's connect to. if that is supposed to work like that, news to me, because that's just weird.

    anways.

my wireless router is online, all the lights flashing and what-have-you, but i cannot receive wireless signal to my notebook. my ipod touch doesn't receive the signal either. and neither of them have broken wifi connections because i can connect to my neighbors router from my room (with a terrible connection of course, nevertheless).

i've tried to reset the router, but i receive no luck in that the router doesn't reset when i push the button. i've tried to manually connect to the router through a web browser, but it fails to load the page (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 both do not work).

anyone have any ideas on how to fix issue? as far as technical skills, i'm decent at computers, and i'll look into whatever reasonable suggestions people provide.

it's killing me not being able to check my email for school and not being able to telework at home (which sucks majorly because we are currently having inclement weather).

any help would be very appreciated.

When you plug into the router, you get a normal IP address? Or is it 168.x.x.x? When this happens, can you connect to the internet at all?

Set the router IP address to 192.168.3.1 and set the modem to 192.168.4.1

Check that DHCP is enabled in the router, and your computer is set to Automatically Obtain IP addresses.

Ping the router and modem through your computer. Sometimes the browser will block local addresses when running proxies.

Is the SSID broadcast enabled? What wireless security mode did you set it at?

To reset a WRT54G you have to keep the reset button pressed for 30 seconds or more (while power cord is connected). Anything less than 30 seconds will only reboot the router, no settings will be changed.

it's a regular IP address, and yes i'm connected that way right now as i type.

it's basically like connecting directly to the modem. i even output the same exact IP of my modem while running it through the router.

set it under the LAC connection properties? or type that into a browser. the SSID broadcast was enabled. i've been using this router for a few years.

i'm assuming by security you mean the encryption and whatnot? i have it set to a WEP key.

    EDIT:

when i double click Local Area Connection, the address type says it's assigned by DHCP.

if i have to manually do this by connecting to the router through 192.168.x.x i can't at this moment.

Did you try the 30 second hard reset like I said in my previous post?

yes, that didn't reset anything. or at least it doesn't seem like it. when i'm pushing it down initially, or after 30 seconds, none of the lights flash as if they were booting up; it flashes regularly without any skips or notifications of starting back up.

Do not plug the modem in yet. The IP could be colliding with the router. Its best to start with the minimum.

    1) Reset the router by holding the reset button at the back for 30 seconds. Log into the router page, and change the IP address to 10.152.99.1

    2) Double check DHCP is enabled and set the wireless SSID name, broadcast ON and use WPA security.

    3) See if your notebook picks the SSID up.

i disconnected the modem from the router, and i held the reset button for 30 seconds, though was unsuccessful with connecting to the router page.

am i able to plug in only the router and log onto the router page?

Go to your command prompt and try pinging 192.168.1.1 (i think thats the default ip address for linksys routers)

Yes you can, don’t need to connect the modem to log in to the router.

Can you give us the output you receive when you type ipconfig at the command prompt ?

go to control panel > Network connections > Local area network adapter > Properties > TCP/IP v4 Properties; make sure you have slected Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Levenly, what you need to do is first of all Reset the Linksys Router. With the Router plugged in and lights on, press and hold down the reset button for a minute if need be.

After the Router has ben Reset to factory defaults you will now need to configure it. All you need is the power cable plugged in the Router and an ethernet cable going from port 1 on the Router to the laptop. Just those two cables should be plugged in the Router.

You should assign the computer a static IP Address of 192.168.1.10; a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0; and a Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1

You'll need to access the Network Connections section to do this. Do a Start-->Run and type ncpa.cpl and hit enter. Right click the LAN (Local Area Connection) and select Properties; at the bottom ensure both checks are entered. Scroll down in the list to Internet Protocol, select it and then hit Properties. Here you will enter the IP Addresses above. You do not need to enter anything for the DNS section at this time. Press Ok, Ok, and Close.

From here open an Internet Browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address field and hit enter. The Router's main config. page should appear; the default username/password should be admin/admin or username blank and password admin. You can go through your manual to verify.

Once you log in the Router you should go to the Setup tab and set it up to Automatically attain an IP Address from the Modem (for WAN/Internet). So the Internet IP Address should be set as DHCP. You should also set the LAN side of the Router to DHCP (this is enabled by default). Save those settings...Now go through the Wireless Tab and change the default Linksys SSID name to something of your chocie and also configure encryption/security. I highly recommend WPA Personal over WEP as it is a more secure encryption type. But some devices such as an iPhone may have issues connecting wirelessly w/ WPA. If this case arises w/ you you can always opt for WEP.

Under the Setup Tab the Router should be in Gateway mode...under the Wireless Tab the Router should be in AP (Access Point) mode. You should also change the default log in credentials for access to the Router; you can change that under the Management section. When you've finished config. the Router you can go ahead and plug the cable from the Modem into the WAN port of the Router.

On the laptop go to the Network Connections section, right click on the Wireless Adapter, select Properties ensure the two checks at the bottom of the window are selected then choose Internet Protocol from the list and select Properties. Ensure both sections are set to Automatically recieve IP Addresses. For the LAN Adapter you can put that back to Automatic also and disable it seeing that you'll be using the laptop wirelessly. Click on the Wireless Adapter in the task tray and search for your Router and try to connect to it. If you don't see it and instead get a message about WZC being disbaled go to Start--> Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Look for Wireless Zero Config. in the list and make sure it's set to Automatic and the service is Started.

    Good Luck!

    i'm currently at work,

but i tried ipconfig previously in command prompt and it gave me 0.0.0.0 for everything.

and i had those settings in the TCP/IP properties by default.

    @ makaveli72

yeah i had the WEP because of my wii and my xbox connections at the time, and now my ipod touch. when i get home from work, i'll report back and let you know if i run into any problems. so far, my router plugged into my laptop alone doesn't seem to let me be able to configure the router, though i will try your suggestions.
