OK, here's an idiot's question - OK to use recovery discs to get rid of AOL?

Just got my new laptop, and was going through the set-up. I think I inadvertently set up AOL. Yes I know, the step where you hook up the phone cable should be a tip-off, but there was NO MENTION of AOL, just instructions to enable internet updates. Only after it was finished did anything come up pertaining to AOL.

Will I be OK using the recovery disks to get rid of this? I have heard horror stories about AOL, how once you have it, you can never get it fully out of your system. Tell me I'm just having new lappy paranoia.

I second that. You shouldn't need to deal with that. The recovery process will just put that crapware back on your machine. Yet another reason why I buy from smaller, specialty shops.

I have had problems where AOL never fully uninstalled even after uninstalling it from add/remove programs. You may be able to get rid of any remaining files with CCleaner, I'm not sure though.

Under network connections you might need to change the option, somewhere, where it connects via phone for something broadband/wireless/etc/blah blah.

How tricky of AOL to do that though. Typical. After more versions than Windows they can't keep tricking people. Hey, we'll change the color and name it version 11.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yeah, it's unfortunate that companies think they have to go to those lengths.

If you made the mistake and sign up with them, you better start the termination process. Before it's to late.

use the recovery cd if you really want to remove it. The last one I un-installed, I did a search after words for "AOL" only found 200+.

He didn't sign up for it, AOL came with his computer (as a lot of computers come with AOL preinstalled with the rest of the bloatware.
