    Hi again,

Well, my problem in the other post was fixed... I don't know why a computer would boot into safe mode after a driver update but it did. Anyway, I have another problem which isn't nearly as urgent (at least the computer involved this time is my own!). I just purchased a Gateway P-172X FX. I configured it to work with our wireless router; I gave it the WEP password and it connects to the internet and displays a full bar connection rating. However, even when the computer is in the same room as the router, the actual internet connection is slower that in my desktop that's located across the house and only has 2 bars of connection strength! I'm having to type this post on the desktop because it takes the notebook up to 2 minutes to load an NBR page.

This problem seems to occur 75% of the time I use the laptop. The other 25% it connects fine, although it still seems a bit slow. It also seems to be more likely to happen when I bring the computer out of the same room as the router and then bring it back. The router is a linksys BEFW11S4 wireless G. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Assuming its brand new in the sense that you have no spyware on it, i would uninstall the wireless card through the device manager and reboot the computer letting windows reinstall it for you.

Make sure also that you are not getting interference, try to change the channel.

Would having 2 wireless computers using the same channel cause interference even if one of them is not doing anything with its connection?

Also use WPA. WEP can be cracked with ease.

Make sure it's set to connect to AP only other wise it may try to connect to the other pc. May want to check the MTU, try a lower setting like 1492.

And some cards have problems with WEP, since all of the attention is now toward WPA.

The router is using just one channel for all the computers, but sometimes you could get interference for some other sources (e.g. cordless phones).

So, to answer to your question, it shouldn't, but try it and see what happens.
