I have a desktop with a cable modem in my house. What do I need to do to, so I can surf the internet wirelessly on my notebook?

What do the LAN ports on the routers do? (Stupid question, I know, but I have never dealt with wireless, sorry.)

Basically what I want to do is:

    Desktop to be wired (ethernet)

    Laptop to be wireless

I have no need to access multiple computers on a network.

Thanks in advance for any input.

You will need a wireless router or a std router + AP.

You do the setup with the PC used to setup the service, proably your desktop pc. There is a section to clone the MAC addess if it does not connect. Which will not make any difference if your ISP does not use them for access control. Make sure you change the Def password. I recomend changing the def subnet too.

Once the wireed is up and running. You will need to setup the WPA security for the wireless. If you only have the one NB set the router to "G Only", if your NB has a 11g wireless card. This will keep you speed at max, if some one has a 11b system near by. Once setup, you will need to setup the notebook with the WPA pass phrase/key. The key should be max length, using all pritable chr. DO Not use any words that are in dictionaries. A good WPA key is key to securing your network. Change 2 setting in the notebook, All under the wireless network Advanced options. Connect to AP only and UN CHECK Automaticly connect to non-prefered networks.

The Lan port on a router refers to your LAN. The WAN port is the www or your ISP network, which you are a part of.
