I am concerned of cost to my bill so bear with me.
I was told I can hook my phone up to my laptop, Sager with My WiFi technology and be able to use it as a phone without incurring cell phone charges. I am in a non US country right now and I have my cell phone, a Samsung Epic 4G using Wifi to connect to the laptop. It says its connected. I also have it in airplane mode to ensure it doesnt use some other source to try to connect/roam.
So, if I am connected via the wifi hotspot of the laptop, will I get billed on my sprint bill for using the phone to call my wife?
This is new to me, be gentle.
    Thanks

So you are trying to use your mobile phone's wifi connected to your laptop's wifi to make phone calls?

The phone may support VOIP mode, but you would need a VOIP softwares like Skype, to make calls to mobile phone or landline on the other end (your wife in this case).

If you are going to use VOIP there are apps that allow you to use your cell phone without WiFI but you need a data plan anyhow. If you are doing this to contact another computer through VOIP it can be done for free. If you want to contact other cell phones than you need a pay service. I use skype from my computer to call out only and can reach any cell phone or land line and it cost me 2.95 a month for US/Canada. I have used this service for three years and the quality was not to impressive at the start but quality has improved greatly.

Skype is one of many different VOIP services available. I would do more research to find out what is right for your situation.

There are VOIP apps for cell phones but they seem to be platform specific and I did not see which phone, carrier or phone operating system posted. Here is skype mobile Skype on your mobile device

I use Sprint. i will be calling Sprint, my wife. It has a video phone app already on it called qik, but I am not sure my wife has it on hers. I just want to call, not necessarily do video chat.

To make it simple I would just use skype from your computer. If you only setup for outgoing calls it is pretty cheap. You can get on there site and see what the rate is for your current location back to your wife. You can also have your wife put skype on her computer and then you could go computer to computer for free with voice only or voice and video. I have a friend at a library who contacts there family at a preset time twice a week this way. Free to hungry from the US is great.

I have decided to use skype or whatever I can. The phone refuses to connect to the laptop on WiFi. I have it in Airplane mode, yet I have the WiFi on on the laptop and the phone. It just keeps scanning and looking for ip address, even though ip address and password are within the phone, and recognized as a WiFi network.
I have 3G off, and Airplane mode on, and Wifi on.

OK what operating system is on your computer and what wifi card does it use. I must of missed this somehow in the beginning. For instance I have Windows 7 Ultimate and my wifi card is the 5100. Connectify supports my wifi card so I use there free app to allow my daughters, son and there friends to use there phones and book readers to connect to it.

Are you using the My WiFi application to hook up your phone. If so was the MY WiFi already installed on your computer or did you go to the intel driver site and manually select it. A major issue between wireless devices and computers is the security. What kind of security does your phone support.

Yes, I am using My WiFi. Trying to. It uses WPA/WPA2 PSK security.
It even shows the laptop connection speed of 72Mbps. ANd connection is excellent.
I really dont understand? Is it because airplane mode is on?
