Got my new laptop (ASUS Z70va) a couple of weeks ago and was able to easily connect to the internet through my wireless system at home. But today, I brought my laptop to work where they have a wired network expecting to plug my computer into there network and surf the net, but I couldn't establish a connection. I have high-speed cable service provider at home and DSL at work.

I know this is probably the stupid question of the day, but I'm going on the road for about ten days at the end of the month, and I like to be sure I have internet access if I use the hotel's internet service.

Have you checked the TCP/IP configuration on the ethernet device? At work, I must always use a static IP and at home I use a dynamic one. If it's not set correctly, it will never connect in whichever place I am.

It's simple to forget but did you have the Local Area Connection enabled?

    some things to check:

    1. does your workplace enable some kind of security for the wired LAN that would prevent you from getting your IP goodies?

    2. did you log in on battery? your powersaving features may have the NIC disabled when on battery.

    3. maybe the drop and/or cable was dead

type of security block. I brought my laptop home last night and hook it up to the internet via wire and I was surfing the net immediately. I would think a hotel room would have a dynamic IP like my house, so I think I'll be okay when I travel.
