I searched but didn't see any info on this problem. I have a Compaq C500 (C502us) running Vista basic. Well after some virus issues i did a full sytem restore to oem. Well no i can only get internet through wireless or if i connect to a router. if i connect directly to the cable modem i get "local access only" unidentified network. Hp has been no help, advising me to send them the laptop along with 298 dollars because its about 2 months out of warranty.

PPPoE? In that case it seems that the User ID/Password are stored on the router instead of the modem.. And the modem's probably working in bridge mode. You'll have to change the related settings. Of course, this is just one of the many possibilities.. Could be some other error as well...

I have tried several different modems, as i thought it was that at first. the computer works on my router no problem. But when i take it to my moms house its a no go. it's her laptop, i tried another laptop at her house and it was just fine.

At your mom's house, is she using the same subnet as your network or different? I would look at the firewall settings and add a rule for her subnet. Also are you doing any mac filtering on the router. If so I would disable, mac filtering is a poor excuse for not setting up WPA(2) correctly. If you get any kind of connection run "ipconfig /all" and look at the values and compair to a working pc or post here.
