I hope someone can help me with this problem. I have an ACER 5672 (Windows XP Home) connected wirelessly with a Netgear Router. I also have another PC wired directly to the router.

I’ve set up a number of folders on the other PC for shared network access and then mapped these folders as networked drives on the ACER.

When I power up the ACER with the other PC switched off I get the expected message telling me that the mapped drives could not be restored. However, when I open explorer (My Computer) the icons for the mapped drives indicate that the mapped drive is connected – i.e., there is no red cross. In actual fact, as soon as you open My Computer (or refresh the explorer window) the icon with the red cross is displayed for a split second before it is replaced immediately with the icon without the red cross.

Explorer definitely knows that the mapped drive is disconnected since right-clicking to display the properties of the drive shows that the mapped drive is disconnected.

I’ve spent hours searching the web but to no avail – I don’t know if it’s a windows problem or an Acer application problem (the closest I got to someone with a similar problem spoke about Network Provider (NP) dll’s but then my brain started hurt) :(

Any help would be very welcome. :)

I understand the issue, but don't get why this bothers you. I concur that it's annoying and isn't working properly though. That said, I don't have any advice for you.

I'm not the only person using the notebook - the whole family use it (including my two young daughters). I just want it to be clear when the network is connected.
