Hi I just bought an Elitebook 2560 but no matter what I do the Internet won't work. I downloaded ethernet drivers but the internet is still dead. The cable works on my other netbook but not the new one. How do I make it work?

The option is there but I need a password which I don't have so I can't use wifi.

Possibly not but with my other Elitebook (8440p) I just had to install some ethernet drivers from the HP website for the internet to work after I had reinstalled the OS.

I reinstalled the OS on the newer Elitebook (2560p) and it's a dead end. The internet just won't work.

Do you know what's wrong? I'm not exactly an IT tech so I am clueless.

Maybe physically look in the ethernet jack and see if there is any bent pins.

@Gus45 Create a mobile hotspot with your phone and connect to it using Wi-Fi.
This will at least confirm that all the networking services are functional and the problem is really with Ethernet, not some of those services.

That works. I had to google for instructions but yeah it it did the trick. In that case the ethernet jack is the problem?

    @Gus45
Well it's either the Ethernet jack or the driver or the Ethernet card is simply disabled.
    Check the device manager.
Can you check with a different cable though? Just to rule out the cable - sometimes a wonky cable will work with one device and not with the other.

So if I use the phone hotspot it drains the "data" right? But not if I use a "public hotspot"?

I'm not updated with certain tech.

Yes, that is the case. But a public hotspot is not a safe solution.

I can't find anything called "Ethernet" in the DM but under "Network cards" there are two devices featured:

I downloaded an ethernet driver from the HP website, so I just assumed it would work. There's an option to update your drivers from the device manager as well so I could try that.

This is what I see. Could this be the equivalent to Ethernet? Also, under "Other units" there are a bunch of "incomplete" devices. It says something like their drivers aren't installed.

I took a screenshot and tried to host it but it looks dead so never mind. Oh and I don't plan on using public hotspots with the netbook.

Actually I'm using the netbook now, through that wifi hotspot thing you mentioned. The USB port my phone is jacked into is obviously working, but the Ethernet cable can't be plugged in into that one.

Are there possibly any Ethernet cables that would fit into the "phone port"? If the original Ethernet port is damaged, maybe I can use the phone port instead.

Intel 82579LM is your Ethernet cards and looking at the screenshot provided by you, it's installed properly.

You can't use phone port instead of Ethernet though. It's a modem for one thing and V90 for another - that means its top speed would be 56kbps which is very very very slow. It's 7KB/s

Check a different cable. If confirmed that Ethernet is not working buy something like this , or just use Wi-Fi.

Maybe the router you're plugged into has dhcp disabled and static IPs defined for mac addresses?

I'm not using a router. The ethernet cable goes from this wall outlet right to the jack.

Do you have another computer you can plug in that wall outlet? The outlet should be connected to some sort of networking device ( switch, router, firewall) on the other end.

I have two Netbooks. The original one has a faulty keyboard but the Internet works fine. The keyboard just flipped out overnight. The letter "I" would make combos like "ie7x" or for example and other individual keys won't work at all.

The other Netbook is the legendary one with the possibly faulty ethernet port.

It's literally connected from the outlet to the Netbook but I used to have a router here too so I'll have to check my storage unit for it.

Also can't you create a wireless connection with a router? If the ethernet port really is bad that would suffice. If so is it complicated? I don't have much experience with configuring stuff.

Ok so I did find a USB keyboard in my storage unit and it works fine on the other Netbook as well as another Ethernet cable.

Tried the other cable on the faulty Netbook but it's still dead but it still works fine with the other Netbook. So I'll have to assume the Ethernet port is shot.

    A few ideas:

    1. boot into the bios and make sure Ethernet is not disabled.

    2. check any HP or intel utility software that might be installed and see if somehow Ethernet is switched off in the software.

    3. Maybe delete the "Intel 82579LM" Ethernet adapter from device manager and let windows re-install it with a generic windows driver.

    4. Try the generic intel driver from Here

If the hotspot is created from your data connection, then it will use up your data.

If you can return it and have it repaired or replaced, I would do that. Otherwise, you may want to be buy a Ethernet USB dongle.

When you plug in the cable into your Ethernet port, what does Network Connections tell you? No media connected or connected with problem?
