Problems Networking XP and _Vista Machines Together

One addition to this otherwise exquisite guide might be a little sentence or two regarding issues on a network with mixed XP and _Vista machines. Specifically, if you're having trouble getting your _Vista machine(s) to "see" or cooperate with your XP machine(s) you may need to download and install on the XP machines Microsoft's Link Layer Topology Discovery ("LLTD") Responder.

A description of the problem with networking XP and _Vista systems together is provided by Microsoft in KB922120, and the LLTD Responder itself can be downloaded from here.

Just joined NBR, great guide! Much more concise and valuable than networking books I've browsed through.

    An asset to the forums

    Hey people,

Awesome guide there. Thanks a lot.

Need a small clarification / confirmation, Please?

Till now we have been having an ADSL modem, and we use the internet at home with the laptop' connected to the Modem directly with the ethernet cable. But the number of people in our apartment has grown to 4 now, and the modem we had got with the internet connection only has 2 ports for the ethernet cable.

Now we decided we need to have a wireless at home, and I suggested setting up just a wireless access point (may be Linksys, since I saw that one in mediaworld here). I read around quiet a few articles and guides on setting up home networks, and there was this option to have either a wireless router or a wireless access point... Am I right here?

Second, for the wireless router, the guides / articles (including one from microsoft I think) suggested connecting the modem to the wireless router, and then we access the internet from out laptop' through wi-fi. Is this right? And would it be possible to still have a cable connection to the wirelss router which I can use, while the others use the wireless??

Third, as I understood, I preferred to have a wired connection for myself, while the other members were ok with the wireless, and so I suggested getting a wireless access point, in which case, we could connect the modem to the wireless access point device, while I can still have an ethernet connection / cable connection for myself. Is this correct / possible / OK??

Finally, do we actually need to get the wireless router? I was thinking we don't need it. Is this correct too?

Thanks a lot for clarifying people. Cheers.

That's an awesome guide; I'll refer to this the next time my family asks me for help with their wireless network. Kudos!

Yes the can, as the router is the gateway to all devices attached be it LAN or WLAN.
But it can only get to shared drives and devices and ofcourse WAN (internet)
