Maybe you saw it on the headlines at Yahoo, but thought I'd post it here. The video is stupid because the guy asking the question is clueless about networking but the article is a decent read.

Basically they are saying that it has the capability to allow every person in China to simulatanously make a video phone call or download every movie ever created in 4 minutes.

Problem with all this for an end user, will it really help? I mean in the USA especially we're stuck with the "slow" 6-10Mbps downloads compared with the rest of the world. And heck don't even mention DSL, doesn't that cap out at 6Mbps?

I'd be more excited if they announced 100Mbps internet downloads for under $40/mo.

Great, so now everyone in China is going to be calling up - I don't think the tape on my answering machine is long enough for that!

DSL in various forms can go far higher than 6Mbps.
Hell ADSL2+ will carry up to 24Mbps and the technology has progressed beyond as well, its just generally not widely available. I seem to remember hearing BT for example were testing ADSL technology recently that maxed out in the 100Mbps region.

There will always be progress, it's just implementing the new tech thats the problem, vast areas of the UK for example can't get anywhere near 6-10Mbps, I know my tweaked line is more like 3.
