How do I go about printing from my laptop to my printer that is connected to my desktop? Do I just need to connect the printer to my router with an ethernet cable? I don't have an extra cable right now and I want to know before I go buy one. Thanks!

The printer probably won't have a ethernet connection on it. The way I have mine connected is to set up sharing a printer. First, you have to share the printer on the desktop it is connected to. Then, on your notebook, go to Control Panel, and double click on Printers and Faxes. Then select Add a Printer from the menu in the left pane, and follow the instructions. In there, will be an option to add a printer that is on the network. That should work.

If your printer does support a network connection (cat5), it is a better option. Some of the low end lasers have nic, starting as low as $150.

    a. you can connect your printer to your desktop, which must be always on and must have a working home network

    b. or you can connect your printer directly to your router (if you have a network printer connection)

...then from your notebook, go to Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > Add Printer

Just connect your printer to your desktop, and make sure that the printer is set to default plus make sure to share it on the network.

or if your printer doesnt support network, you can buy a print server and hook the printer via usb to the print server thats connected to the router. thats how I do it.
