    Hey,

I'm new to the whole area of wireless networking. I have a desktop , a dell inspiron 6400 and an apple Macbookpro.

I was thinking of hooking up the pc directly to a wireless router through an ethernet cable and connect the mbp and dell through a wlan.

The router will be placed directly above the laptop on the first floor while the laptops will be downstairs. There will be just a single layer of concrete blocking it. Will this affect my connection strength a lot?

Also, the desktop will be using the internet connection 24x7 while i might switch on the mbp or the dell for 2 hours a day. Will the sharing affect the internet speed?

I just need a basic model as i'll only be surfing the web and checking the mails on my laptops. I'll be doing the heavy duty downloading and playing online games on the desktop.

What budget should i look for? what company? and any models you could recommend?

    Thanks.

From my experience no, having the Router above will not affect WLAN devices below it. Again, in my own experience the WLAN devices below the Wireless Router seemed to even have a better connection than the devices on the same floor. I don't know if you will have the same experience but this is my findings; And it is also concrete flooring and walls as in your case.
The Internet speed would be affected if multiple users are using the Internet connection on the various laptops/desktop at the same time.
LINK! Which can be found on tigerdirect, newegg, .amazon etc.

Edit: BTW that Wireless Router is not suited for a Cable Internet connection; so if you want to use the Router as your sole Networking device and you have Cable Internet then that Router wouldn't be applicable for you. If you're using Cable Internet and already have a Cable Modem in place then you're fine to get that Wireless Router.
