I have a Linksys WRT54G ver 1.1 I just updated the firmware yesterday after I found out this router has never been updated.

Linksys WRT54G firmware ver 4.21.1 which added alot of stuff to my router. I am running Vista Ultimate on my PC and laptop. When I click start|network I see media drives, laptop/PC, printer.

However today there a new icon that looks like a router label: Residential Gateway Device

I click on it and has a general tab and a network device tab. Under the general tab there a settings button click on it a service window comes up to add services. No idea what that is none are listed.

Click on the network tab and it tells me Residential Gateway Device has device maker Linksys web address also list a mac address and a unique id, IP address.

Before the firmware update it wasn't there. What is this for?

That's there to represent the router on your network. It probably didn't show up until you updated the router's firmware because either (i) the firmware upgrade made it possible for _Vista to "see" the router where before it couldn't "see" it, just use the network it made available (fwiw, _Vista also cannot "see" computers with XPSP2 running as the OS unless those computers have something called the Link Layer Topology Discovery responder installed), or (ii) the firmware revision and the corresponding power down/power up cycling of the router caused _Vista to "see" the router as a new device and assign it an icon in your networks window.
