At the end of the month we are going to have 200 mbps internet installed. I haven't the faintest which router I want however I want the best money can buy.

I will be streaming full HD movies through it (from HDD) and would like to be able to plug my printer and external HDD to it to access my data wirelessly too.

Which wireless router should I get. I would assume a router capable of 300 mbps would be adequate but have no knowledge as to which brand or model is most reliable.

Two laptops will be running off it using Intel 5300 and Killer 1103 network cards respectivly.

Any advice is greatly appreciated so I can make a good purchase decision.

300mbps is just a theoretical value- real life one nowhere close.

Since you would benefit from a faster wireless connection and both your cards are capable of 450mbps (if you have three antennas in your laptops) I would recommend a three stream router.

That would leave you with a Linksys E4200v1 or an Asus RT-N66U (see sticky for descriptions).

Adding the fact that you want to use USB for printer-sharing and HDD sharing a router with two USB ports would be better.

That leaves you with Asus RT-N66U and that would be my recommendation.

Yeah, you're pretty much stuck with the RT-N66U as the only choice, it's a good router though. No 300Mbps router is going to achieve 200Mbps of actualy throughput. The best i've personally been able to achieve on the deserted 5GHz band is ~160Mbps and that in itself was rather surprising on two streams.

Thank you for the advice. I have purchased the Asus RT-N66U. It wasn't cheap but I hope this will be a good investment for the next 10 or more years :)

I am hoping this router at 5ghz in our relatively small flat will perform excellently. Can't wait to be able to print wirelessly and be able to access my external 2TB drive wirelessly too. That will be downright awesome!!
