Im about to set up a home network and share my cable internet. It will just be between 1 desktop and 1 laptop. I was wondering if I need to purchase a wireless card for my desktop or can it be wired directly to the router. I would prefer not to buy a wireless adapter if I can just plug it right in as the router will always be by the desktop. Now I need to know if I have to purchase a seperate adapter to get the wired connection or will I be able to plug the router right into my computer where my modem is plugged into right now? Also is there any drawbacks to having one wired and the other wireless?

Yes, basically a ethernet cable goes from the router to the desktop, and a laptop wireless. Which in this operation - All you need is the Router and a wireless card for the network. An ethernet cable comes with the router so you dont need to by one seperate.

    Again

Cable cord to the modem - Ethernet Cable from modem to router = One ethernet cable from router to desktop and the laptop with a wireless card.

Yep a simple thing as that can save you a lot of money that could be useful elsewhere. By the way, Good Luck!
