My friend lives in Mtn. View Ca. and she is having problems since Google launched their free WiFi in the city. Her wireless card keeps letting her know that there is a new connection available. That being the new Google WiFi. Well when this prompt comes up, it causes her current wireless connection with her Netgear router to disconnect. I tried unchecking the "let windows manage your wireless connections" and this worked for awhile but the disconnects are still happening. All this started since the Google launch. Is there is way to turn off the detection without disabling the wireless card? Or any other suggestions out there? Thanks.

the only thing i have to say is this.

google is a multi billion dollar company and we're in the USA.

i would submit to google's power, and just use the wifi they provide lol.

im half kidding, but half not. ;) stop paying for internet, too! yee haw!

Since there are wifi spots all over Mtn View, its probably picking up the fastest connection. You might want to pick the fastest and tell it to automatically always choose that one.

Well while its free which is a good thing, its not as fast as her comcast cable. Speed test was about 5.5 dl and the Google is about 800kb. The other thing is security. I think that would have to go to the Comcast connection also.

Open up the properties of the internet connection and go to "Wireless Networks" and there you will see a list of networks that ur friend has connected to before.

Just click on the Google WiFi and hit "Delete" on the side.

    That should clear it up.

    1. if she is connected a network, those msgs should not come up; they only pop up prior to connecting

    2. if she isn't connected, she should disable her card

    maybe i'm misunderstanding the situation?

Ya took me awhile to find that but I did try that. It just detected it about 5 minutes later and it was put right back on the list.

She just has the single laptop hooking up to comcast through a netgear router. Not connected by ethernet cable. Wireless. So disabling the card wouldn't be an option in this case I wouldn't think. Should I go and create a new network with just the one laptop being the network? Would this stop the prompts of new connections available and the disconnects?

i don't understand this because once you establish a wifi connection, the card stops looking for new/other connections.

are you saying that she is connected to a router wirelessly and yet is still getting pop up messages? that doesn't sound right.

Ya that nails it exactly. She is connected wirelessly and she will get a pop up every now and then saying another wireless connection is now available and to click for details. When this happens, her signal is dropped and she has to reconnect.

moving the netgear to automatic and higher on the list then the google wifi will cure this. Also making it manual for the google will help too.
