I'm about to sign up with Verizon DSL and in their packages they offer a Modem which is free with their $14.95 plan (one-year commitment) OR a Modem + Router that costs an extra $14.95. My question is that if I'm planning to use the DSL service with two computers (one desktop which will be connected to the modem and a laptop) will I need to get the router? Would I neccessarily need to get the router from my ISP or could I go buy one myself?

If you're going to be using more than one pc you will need a router. Both will connect to the router either via wired or wireless. You can purchase one yourself as well which would be my preference. That way you'll get exactly what you want and not worry about getting a used router that might not be of the best quality. All you need is a wireless router which will typically have four ethernet ports for connecting other pc's via wire and you'll need to use a wired connection for intial setup as the wireless function is disabled by default. Netgear, IMO, has the best routers, just try to stay away from Linksys, they are troublesome and a pain to setup. :)
