I'm really hoping someone can explaine to me how i can do this please.

Right i have a Pc upstairs on Win xp connected to my Modem/Router (Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless) Via ethernet cable.

I then have a M1530 Laptop on Win XP connected to my router via wireless.

Now i'm sure this can be done but how can i set things up so from the Laptop i can access my desktop computer and and download files from there or send files to it via the router?

I'm a complete newbie at this networking so i'd really like some help please t set up this home network.

    Thank you.

With WinXP the simplest would probably be to set up file sharing provided you're careful to limit access to the shared files so that cannot be viewed from outside your 2-computer network.

If running firewall on the local pc's you will need to setup a rule to allow your subnet. I always recommend disabling FW if you have problems.

You need to turn on File and printer sharing. The select the folder/files you want to share.

It's not the computer name that you need to change. It's you user id, used to login to the pc's. This is not required but it makes life a lot easier. For user groups, rt click on My Computer and select Properties > Computer Name. This will get you to the user groups. For User ID's that is through the Users CP. If you only use the shared folder it's not required.
